From Digital File to Finished Prop
There is a moment in every cosplay build when the armor starts to feel real, but something is still missing.
The Pilot needs an armory.
Titanfall and Apex Legends are filled with some of the most recognizable futuristic weapon designs in gaming. The good news is that you do not need an industrial fabrication shop or years of professional experience to bring one of them into the real world. With the right equipment, a quality model, patience, and enough motivation, nearly anyone can print the prop they have always wanted.
This Mission Log covers the supplies needed to begin building nonfunctional, convention-safe armory pieces for cosplay and display.
01 // THE PRINTER

The first major piece of equipment is, naturally, a 3D printer.
My recommendation is the Creality K1 Max. It offers a large build volume, enclosed printing, solid performance, and a relatively accessible setup process for the price. The larger print area is especially valuable for armory projects because it can reduce the number of individual sections needed for larger components.
That does not mean it is the only printer capable of doing the job. Plenty of builders create incredible props using smaller or less expensive machines. The best printer is ultimately the one you can learn, maintain, and use consistently.
What matters most is understanding that the printer is a tool, not a magic box. Failed prints will happen. Settings will need adjustment. Parts may require reorientation, support changes, or another attempt.
Every failure teaches you something.
02 // QUALITY FILAMENT
A detailed model deserves dependable material.
I recommend starting with reputable filament brands such as:
Overture
Creality
Elegoo
Standard PLA is suitable for many display and cosplay applications because it is affordable, widely available, and relatively easy to print. PLA+ may offer additional strength for thin details, connection points, and props that will be transported frequently.
Cheap filament can sometimes work perfectly, but inconsistent diameter, poor winding, moisture, or brittle material can turn a long print into wasted time. When a component may take several hours or several days to complete, saving a few dollars on questionable filament is rarely worth the risk.
Store unused filament in a dry container whenever possible. Moisture can lead to stringing, weak layers, rough surfaces, and inconsistent extrusion.
03 // THE DIGITAL FILE
The quality of the finished prop begins with the quality of the model.
Look for files created by designers who understand:
Printable geometry
Part separation
Assembly
Wall thickness
Alignment
Hardware placement
Scaling
Practical finishing

For BRIDGE projects, the focus is on nonfunctional cosplay and display props. Any compatibility with airsoft components should be approached separately, responsibly, and in accordance with local law, venue policies, and field rules.
A good digital file saves enormous time. It will not eliminate sanding, fitting, gluing, or troubleshooting, but it gives the project a solid foundation.
Before purchasing a file, check:
The included parts
Assembly instructions
Finished dimensions
Suggested hardware
Customer makes
Designer support
Whether the model is intended for cosplay, display, or another use
Support designers whose work you value. A well-designed file represents hours of research, modeling, testing, and revision.
04 // BASIC PRINTING SUPPLIES
Beyond the printer and filament, a small set of tools will make the process much easier.
Printing and cleanup
Flush cutters
Hobby knife
Small files
Deburring tool
Sandpaper in multiple grits
Digital calipers
Super glue
Two-part epoxy
Clamps
Painter’s tape
Disposable gloves
Assembly
Depending on the model, you may also need:
Metal rods
Wooden dowels
Screws
Nuts
Heat-set inserts
Magnets
Alignment pins
Elastic or webbing
Epoxy putty
Always review the designer’s instructions before buying hardware. A file may already include specific channels or mounting points designed around particular dimensions.
05 // FINISHING SUPPLIES
A print straight off the build plate usually looks like a print. Finishing is what transforms it into a believable piece of equipment.
A basic finishing kit should include:
Filler primer
Sandable automotive primer
Spot putty
Body filler for larger seams
Sandpaper from coarse to fine grits
Acrylic or enamel paint
Masking tape
Clear coat
Weathering paints or washes
Small brushes
Disposable respirator filters appropriate for the products being used
The general process is straightforward:
Print. Assemble. Fill. Sand. Prime. Paint. Weather. Seal.
The amount of work involved depends on the desired finish. A heavily weathered battlefield prop may hide minor imperfections naturally. A clean manufacturer-style finish will demand much more sanding and surface preparation.
Neither approach is wrong. The finish should support the story you want the prop to tell.
06 // SCALE BEFORE YOU PRINT
Scaling is one of the easiest ways to waste filament.
A digital model may be technically accurate but still look too large or too small when carried by a real person. Before committing to a full print:
Check the stated dimensions.
Compare them to screenshots and reference images.
Measure the expected length against your body.
Print a small test section when possible.
Consider how the prop will look while wearing armor.
Account for transportation and convention rules.
A weapon that looks correct in isolation may appear undersized next to a bulky Pilot vest and jump pack.
Proportion matters as much as measurement.

07 // PLAN THE ASSEMBLY
Large props are usually divided into multiple printable sections. Before printing everything, study how those sections connect.
Identify:
Structural joints
Cosmetic seams
Alignment pins
Internal supports
Areas under stress
Detachable sections
Electronics compartments
Access panels
Mounting or sling points
Do not rely on glue alone for every major joint. Long props experience leverage, twisting, and accidental impacts. Internal rods, dowels, bolts, or reinforced connections can greatly improve durability.
Build the internal structure first. Surface finishing comes later.

08 // CONVENTION SAFETY
A cosplay prop should be designed with its destination in mind.
Convention policies vary, but common requirements may include:
Brightly marked tips
Inspection at entry
Peace bonding
No functional firing mechanisms
No sharp edges
No exposed metal blades
Restrictions on overall size
Restrictions on realistic finishes
Restrictions on moving or removable parts
Check the event’s current rules before attending. Do not assume that a prop accepted at one convention will be accepted at another.
Build for safety from the beginning rather than trying to modify the prop in the parking lot.
09 // YOU CAN BUILD THIS
The most important tool in the workshop is not the printer.
It is persistence.
You do not need to begin as an expert.
You need enough motivation to learn one step, then another.
Your first print may fail.
Your first seam may be visible.
Your first paint job may not match the image in your head.
That is not evidence that you cannot do it. That is the process.
Somewhere in Titanfall, Titanfall 2, or Apex Legends is the weapon you have always wanted to hold. Maybe it is the CAR. Maybe it is the R-201, the Flatline, the Wingman, the Longbow, or something far more obscure.
The files exist. The machines are accessible. The information is out there.
You can build it.
Not instantly. Not without mistakes. But absolutely.
